We just spoke with our brother Matt who is in Washington State this weekend campaigning for Congressman Doc Hasting and Senate hopeful Mike McGavick. Thus far the response from targeted voters has been positive and their turn-out-the-vote efforts successful.
We thank BYU and other College Republicans across the country for their efforts in battleground states from Washington to Michigan to Georgia and Missouri. Your work will help Republicans maintain control of the House and the Senate.
The latest poll numbers as reported by the Washington Post show Republicans gaining on Democrats in every category. Of course, the article is headlined by typical liberal spin that has nothing to do with the actual numbers.
You’d expect the story to be in the news that Republicans have picked up 8 points on Democrats nationwide or that President Bush’s approval rating rose 3 points or that voters now equally trust Republicans as Democrats in Iraq. It’s interesting to note that this same poll–the Washington Post-ABC News Poll–in 1994 (the year of the Republican takeover) showed dems up 47%-42%. We all know how that one turned out.
As any election maven will tell you, the important thing to look at is the trend, and right now the numbers are trending in favor of Republicans. We’re still hoping Republicans hold the House and Senate, but we know that historically the President’s party loses seats in off year elections. If this trend can simply stem what the liberal media has been trumpeting as a Democratic runaway, we’ll be happy.
**Update: The latest poll numbers from the Pew Research Center show Democrats with a 47%-43% lead among likely voters. This supports the Republican gains reported earlier in the Washington Post-ABC News Poll and reinforces our assertion that the polls are trending Republican.
Sitting in London, thousands of miles away from the action, we’ve been jealous of the fun our brother and his friends have been having campaigning for Mike McGavick and Doc Hastings. After a little search of the RNC website we found this option that allows you to sign up and then call voters reminding them to vote, and vote Republican on Tuesday. Thanks to Skype we’ve called a couple dozen and will continue tomorrow.
